Do you have a chip or crack in your windshield right now? Chips and cracks happen randomly and most people don’t think they are any big deal. We have heard things like, ‘I can see out the windshield just fine, so I’m not worried about that little crack.’ It’s because of those comments that we are writing this blog. Awareness is so very important when you are making decisions about driving safely. We hope you will take two minutes and read this blog so you will make a good decision about when to replace your chipped or cracked windshield.
CASE STUDY #1
One of our customers, Sally, had a chipped windshield from a random small rock that hit her windshield on the highway. She didn’t tend to it and when she went through the car wash the windshield started to crack almost all the way across the windshield. It frightened her to see how easily and quickly this could happen in a car wash! She came in and we told her that even a chipped windshield is compromised and needs to be replaced right away.
CASE STUDY #2
Another client, Jeff, had a small crack in the corner of his windshield. He didn’t think he needed to be concerned about it because it was not in his line of sight while driving. It was OK for a while until he backed into a tree and the windshield instantly started cracking in many directions.
Why did these cracks occur? That’s a great question! The windshield is actually part of the support structure of your vehicle and when it is compromised, so is the integrity of the frame. It ties everything together to keep the people inside safe. Auto manufacturers use tempered glass which means it is a safety glass. It is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass. Even with increased strength, glass is damaged when an object strikes it and there is a noticeable change in the windshield. Once this happens it should be replaced immediately.
Good visibility is another good reason to replace your cracked windshield. Knowing that cracks can get bigger in an instant, for instance when you drive through a pothole, it can change your ability to see out the windshield and compromise your ability to drive safely. You could even cause an accident by over reacting to the unplanned change in your visibility!
Can the repair be a DIY project? As a professional auto body shop we recommend never to take this on as a DIY project because using Super Glue or clear nail polish is not a professional grade product that would restore the integrity of your windshield and safety structure of your vehicle. Besides, most insurance companies cover the cost to replace windshields because they know how vital they are to keeping their drivers safe.
We want you to know that you should not gamble with your safety by delaying windshield replacement when a chip or crack happens. It only takes about 30 minutes to do the replacement and there are even mobile companies who come to your office or home to do it. One such company we recommend is Ultimate Auto Glass for all glass repairs if you are in the greater Atlanta area. They come to you!
